What Is Dental Hygiene?

Dental hygiene is a branch of dentistry primarily concerned with prevention, treatment, and early detection of oral diseases, recognition of orthodontic anomalies, and prevention of further diseases by specially trained healthcare personnel – the dental hygienist.

Dental hygiene involves motivating and informing patients about their current oral health status, explaining existing conditions such as gum inflammation or periodontal disease. The goal is to establish an individualised treatment plan and recommend suitable tools and cleaning techniques.

Oral Symptoms

Various signs may appear in the oral cavity. These include tooth decay, bleeding gums, sensitivity to thermal stimuli, bad breath, and loose teeth.

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay initially appears as a chalky white spot on the tooth surface. Early detection can stop the decay process.

Gum Inflammation and Periodontal Disease

Gum inflammation manifests primarily as bleeding during brushing. Healthy gums do not bleed, are pale pink, not swollen, and firmly surround the tooth. Prolonged inflammation progresses to the bone and ligaments.

Treatment Methods

Plaque and Tartar Removal

Tartar and plaque removal is performed manually or with ultrasonic devices. Both methods complement each other and are combined as needed.

Pigmentation Removal (Air-flow)

The air-flow sandblasting method is suitable for removing most types of pigmentation and also contributes to tooth decay prevention.

Teeth Whitening

In-office Whitening

In-office whitening is performed only at the dental hygienist's or dentist's office. Whitening gel is applied to the tooth surface and left to act.

At-home Whitening

At-home whitening is performed by the patient at home using individual whitening gel carriers.

Internal Whitening

Internal whitening is used for dead teeth that have lost their original colour. The dentist applies a whitening agent inside the tooth.

Additional Services

Dental Jewellery

Application of a small dental jewel on the tooth surface to enhance your smile.

Fissure Sealing

A preventive method where a small amount of filling material is applied into tooth grooves without the need for drilling.
